Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano Erupts Forcing Evacuations

16:30 - 20:00 HST - Leilani Neighborhood Patrol While verifying the status of homes for residents, we got visual confirmation of activity from Luana Street down Fissure 8, 2, 7, 21, 14, 2, 4, 23, 1, 5, 13, 6, and 15 (order bearing East). Kaupili Street remained quiet with slow oozing pahoehoe left of the road heading East toward ocean side. Hookupu and Makamae Street provided a panoramic view of Fissures 2, 7, 21, and 14 discharging lava, creating pahoehoe flows contributing to the slow movement South and East. The intersection of Kahukai Street and Leilani has now been covered by an immense volume of lava from generating from Fissure 5, 13, 6, and 15 creating a vast horizon of volcanic terrain ranging from pahoehoe ponds, lobes, and rivers. The majority of effusion remains to head East toward the ocean while some ponding near Fissure 6 and 15 began overlapping over cooler formed pahoehoe headed slowly toward a previously inundated State of Hawaii warehouse. Fissures at Kahukai Street varied in fountain heights from 25-100ft as sounds of degassing were similar to heavy crashing waves. Leilani Estates is continuously monitored by Leilani residents and the Leilani Community Association alongside Civil Defense, Hawaii Police Department, and the National Guard. For accurate eruption updates, please visit: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/status.html All areas that I have documented throughout this eruptive series have been through approved with legal access. Please kokua and do not attempt to trespass in areas unless official approval has been granted. The majority of my efforts are without pay and all expenses are out of pocket. The content shared is being shared without cost to our local news networks for community awareness and support. Some footage does help to pay a very small portion of my expenses. Many areas are now becoming inaccessible and the majority are dangerous due to volcanic hazards. (Footage by Andrew Richard Hara/Getty Images
