Construction of the new Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project
LOS ANGELES, CA - April 15: With a view of the Los Angeles skyline at sunset, construction workers from Skanska-Stacy & Witbeck work on the Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project that crosses the 101 Freeway and Los Angeles River in Los Angeles at sunset Thursday, April 15, 2021. The bridge is an on-going $588 million bridge replacement project, consisting of 10 sets of arches, which will be LED-lit, forming the Ribbon of Light'' along the viaduct. The project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration, State, and City and scheduled for completion in Summer of 2022. The arches are 10 feet wide, with a typical arch span of 300 feet. Each arch takes 260 cubic yards of concrete to construct or about 65 trucks of concrete. In order to keep the concrete cool enough, it is delivered to the site, then injected with liquid nitrogen to keep it close to ambient temperature. This reduces the potential for concrete cracking.
