The City Exposed The cure all A recent Wednesday at 4:07 p.m.: After a full day of work Andy Stone, 64, wearing only a tiny black Speedo and two swim caps for warmth, heads heart first into the 50 degree waters of the bay. "Always as I walk down the beach I think to myself... Maybe I'll just go back upstairs and get in the sauna," he confesses, which is a feeling this veteran Golden Gate Park gardener still hasn't gotten over despite the fact that he's been subjecting himself to this frigid challenge nearly every day since joining the Dolphin Club a decade ago. Doctors used to insisted surgery was the only fix for a bad back and swollen joints. He disagreed and jumped in the bay. He says it works every time. Now he likes to do laps until he just starts to feel the first effects of hypothermia - about 30 min. "No matter how crumby or tired I felt going in I always feel good coming out. It always feels like a little tiny victory."
