WASHINGTON MONUMENT, WASHINGTON D.C., UNITED STATES OF AMERICA : On Martin Luther King Day, hundreds gather around the Washington Monument for a commemorative walk. The Washington monument is an obelisk standing 169 metres tall and built to commemorate George Washington, the first president of the United States of America (1789 "u2013 1797). Martin Luther King Day is an American federal holiday, observed since 1986 on the third Monday of January, around Martin Luther King Jr"u2019s birthday. He was a baptist minister and non-violent activist of the African-American Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. Besides, he stood in movements struggling for peace and against poverty. Considered as one of the greatest American orator, his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, given on August 28th, 1963 in front of Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. is one of the most important speeches of the 20th century. In this speech, he invited the audience to put an end to racism, demanding civil rights and economic equality for African-Americans. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis.
