Al Smith Sliding Safely Into Third Base

(Original Caption) Despite the assistance from most of the Detroit Tigers infield, Cleveland Indians outfielder, Al Smith, not only slid safely into third base, but on an error continued home to score during the fifth inning of the Tigers-Tribe game at Briggs Stadium on August 12th. On a sacrifice by Indian second baseman Bobby Avila, Tigers first baseman Wayne Belardi (not shown) fielded the ball and fired wildly past the lunging figure of shortstop Harvey Kuenn (right)_ allowing Smith to reach third. Converging, too late, on the play are pitcher George Zuverink (38), catcher Frank House (far left), and third baseman Ray Boone, all of the Bengals. Calling the play is umpire John Flaherty. The injuns ran wild behind the eight-hit pitching of Bob Lemon, winning 10-1.
