They secrete hormones that control many physiological processes. Neuroendocrine tumours, which arise from these cells, are rare and can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). The tumours are usually slow-growing. NETs can cause abnormal, excessive or insufficient hormone production. Symptoms and treatment vary widely depending on the location of the NETs.
