March 31, 2009. Tourists on camels in Erg Chebbi, Morocco. The Saharan Desert stretches across vast areas of North Africa, from the Red Sea to the Atlantic, touching at least eleven countries in all. The ergs are seas of sand composed of gigantic dunes, shaped by the wind. Only a few of these ergs are accessible to the public, among them Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga in south-eastern Morocco.
